Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy injections, and are taken once daily. They are the first GLP-1 weight-loss medication available as a tablet, offering a practical needle-free option for weight management support.
What is the Wegovy pill?
The Wegovy pill is a prescription-only oral semaglutide treatment being developed to support weight management in adults living with obesity or weight-related health conditions. Taken once daily, it is designed to help reduce appetite, manage hunger levels, and support healthier eating habits alongside lifestyle changes
Wegovy weight loss tablets contain the same active ingredient used in semaglutide injections and work by helping to regulate appetite. While not yet available in the UK, they may offer a convenient needle-free option for eligible adults in the future.
Eligibility criteria for the Wegovy pill
The Wegovy pill may be suitable for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above when weight-related health conditions are present. However, the treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Before starting, a healthcare professional will assess your medical history, current health, and any medicines you are taking to determine whether treatment is suitable.
Before taking Wegovy weight loss pills, tell your clinician if you:
- Are over 85 years of age
- Have type 2 diabetes
- Have a history of pancreatitis
- Have severe heart failure
- Have gastroparesis, which slows stomach emptying
- Have diabetic eye disease or experience changes in vision
- Are scheduled for surgery requiring general anaesthetic or deep sedation
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy
- Have severe kidney disease
- Have severe liver disease
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to semaglutide. Inform your clinician about all medicines you use, including levothyroxine, warfarin, and herbal supplements, as these may affect treatment. Effective contraception is recommended during treatment, and extra precautions may be needed if vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.

How does the Wegovy pill help you lose weight?
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 mimicking ingredient that acts on natural hormones involved in appetite control. It supports weight loss by helping to reduce hunger, control cravings, and promote a feeling of fullness for longer after eating.
It also slows how quickly food leaves the stomach and helps regulate blood sugar levels, which can further support appetite control and reduce spikes that trigger cravings.
Is the Wegovy pill safe?
Yes. Wegovy pills have been approved by the MHRA, confirming they meet strict UK standards for safety, quality, and effectiveness in weight management.
Wegovy pill doses
The Wegovy pills have been studied in four daily dose strengths as part of weight-management research:
- 1.5mg
- 4mg
- 9mg
- 9mg
- 25mg
Like other semaglutide treatments, dosing is usually increased step by step, beginning with a lower strength before moving to higher doses. This gradual approach helps support treatment effectiveness, while the tablet strengths are specifically designed for oral absorption.
How effective are Wegovy tablets?
Clinical trials have highlighted the potential effectiveness of Wegovy weight loss tablets for long-term weight management. Participants taking a daily 25mg tablet achieved an average weight loss of 16.6% after 64 weeks, compared with 2.7% in the placebo group.
In addition, many participants were able to achieve meaningful weight-loss goals, with a greater proportion losing 5% or more of their initial body weight during the study period.
Expected weight changes across Wegovy dose levels
Wegovy Weight loss outcomes depend on dose progression, consistency, and lifestyle habits. Higher doses typically provide stronger appetite regulation, although individual responses differ and require clinical review.
| Days on Treatment | Wegovy Pills Dose |
|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | 1.5 mg |
| 31 to 60 | 4 mg |
| 61 to 90 | 9 mg |
| 91+ | 25 mg |

Finding the right weight-loss approach for you
Each treatment offers a different way to support long-term weight management while working through similar appetite-control mechanisms. Your choice should be guided by your personal preferences, medical needs, and advice from a qualified clinician.
How much will the Wegovy pill cost in the UK?
The price of the Wegovy pill in the UK has not been officially confirmed yet. Once it becomes available, the cost is expected to vary depending on the clinic or healthcare provider supplying the treatment.
Are there other weight-loss medications?
Yes, a range of weight-loss tablets are available in the UK, although they work differently from GLP-1 treatments. The Wegovy pill is expected to be the first GLP-1 tablet designed specifically for weight management, while oral semaglutide medicines such as Rybelsus are currently prescribed for type 2 diabetes.
Other tablets may help support weight loss by reducing appetite, limiting fat absorption, or influencing hunger-related signals in the brain.
When will Wegovy tablets be available?
Wegovy pills have been approved by the MHRA and are expected to be available in the UK soon. They are intended for adults living with obesity (BMI 30+) or those who are overweight (BMI 27–30) with related health conditions.

The most common side effects include:
- Mild nausea
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Fatigue (especially in the early weeks of treatment)
These effects often improve as treatment continues. Support is available for managing symptoms.
If you are currently using Saxenda or have used it previously, the following guidance applies:
- If you are taking Saxenda 3.0mg once daily: You may switch to Wegovy 0.5mg once weekly. Although both medicines belong to the GLP-1 class, they contain different active ingredients. Starting at 0.5mg helps reduce the risk of side effects. After four weeks, the dose may be increased gradually in line with prescribing guidance.
- If you are taking a lower dose than 3.0mg of Saxenda: You should start Wegovy at 0.25mg.
- If you previously used Saxenda but had a long break in treatment: Restarting at 0.25mg Wegovy is advised to improve tolerability.
Fatigue (especially in the early weeks of treatment) These effects often improve as treatment continues. Support is available for managing symptoms.
If you are currently using Ozempic or have used it previously for weight loss, the following guidance applies:
- If you are currently taking Ozempic: You may switch to the equivalent dose of Wegovy or the next dose level. For example, if you are on 1.0mg Ozempic, you may move to 1.7mg Wegovy.
- If you have had a short treatment gap of a few weeks: You may continue Wegovy at the dose you previously reached.
- If you were previously taking Ozempic 1.0mg and had a longer break: Restarting Wegovy at 0.5mg is recommended to reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea.
- If Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes: You should continue using Ozempic and not switch to Wegovy. Wegovy is not licensed for diabetes management.
If you are switching from Ozempic used for weight loss, the same guidance applies:
- If you are currently on Ozempic: You may switch to the same or next higher dose of Wegovy.
- If you had a short break in treatment: You may continue from your previous dose level.
- If you had a longer treatment gap: Restarting at 0.5mg Wegovy is safer and helps reduce side effects.
If Ozempic is being used for type 2 diabetes, you should not switch to Wegovy. Switching from Saxenda to Wegovy (summary guidance)
- Saxenda 3.0mg daily → Wegovy 0.5mg weekly
- Lower Saxenda dose → Wegovy 0.25mg
- Long gap after Saxenda → Wegovy 0.25mg
Dose increases should follow manufacturer guidance and clinical advice.

Large meals, greasy foods, highly processed snacks, and excessive sugar may worsen nausea or digestive discomfort during treatment. Many people tolerate smaller balanced meals more comfortably while using Wegovy injections.
Most Wegovy side effects are temporary and often improve as the body gradually adjusts to treatment. Symptoms such as nausea, bloating, stomach discomfort, or headache commonly become milder over time, but persistent or severe symptoms should always be reviewed by a healthcare professional.
