What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name of the medication Tirzepatide, licensed for the treatment of Weight Management (weight loss and weight maintenance) and Type 2 diabetes. It is the latest and most effective weight loss drug, which was launched in February 2024.

It mimics the action of one of your body's naturally occurring incretin hormones – GLP-1 and GIP (the first of its kind)-- released after food intake. These regulate appetite, feeling of fullness, and blood glucose levels. Mounjaro is the first weight loss injection in its class that works by regulating blood glucose levels, satiety, and hunger.

Mounjaro for weight loss can be prescribed to those with a BMI of 30 and above or those with a BMI of 27-30 with at least one additional weight-related comorbidity, such as

  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Osteo-arthritis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol

In addition to controlling blood glucose levels, clinical trials of Mounjaro have shown significant weight loss in patients as well. As compared to other GLP-1 weight loss medications, it shows the most promising results.

While Tirzepatide may be prescribed off-label to help certain patients in their weight management, this will only be done as a second line at the discretion of the prescriber, and only when they are confident of the benefits this would have for their patient.

FAQs

You may need to switch medication from Wegovy to Mounjaro, for example if you are not tolerating Wegovy or if is it not effective. In this case please follow the guidance below:

  1. If you are taking up to 1mg of Wegovy then you need to stop treatment for 2 weeks before commencing treatment of Mounjaro
  2. If you are currently taking a higher than 1mg dose of Wegovy then egovy (more than 1mg) you must stop treatment for 4 weeks before commencing treatment of Mounjaro

You should not take both medications at the same time as they work in very similar ways and could produce dangerous side effects if taken together.

The most common side effects of Mounjaro include headache, vomiting, nausea, stomach ache, and low blood sugar. Almost all of these side effects are seen when the body is adapting to the new weight loss injection.

The side effects start to fade once your body gets used to the new weight loss medication. Your body adapts to the new weight loss treatment in about 4 weeks. However, it may differ from person to person.

Yes, hair loss is one of the mentioned side effects in the patient information leaflet. Check out the patient information leaflet for further information.

No, Mounjaro and Ozempic are two different medications. Although both medications are manufactured for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and controlling blood sugar levels, both have different active ingredients.

Ozempic has the active ingredient Semaglutide, whereas Mounjaro has the active ingredient Tirzepatide. Although both medications are GLP-1 receptor agonists, Mounjaro is also a GIP mimetic.

No, Moujnaro and Wegovy are two distinct medications manufactured by different manufacturers with different active ingredients. Mounjaro is manufactured by Eli Lilly and has the active ingredient Tirzepatide, while Wegovy is manufactured by Novo Nordisk and has the active ingredient Semaglutide.

Both medications are approved for weight loss treatments. However, Mounjaro is unavailable in the UK. Plus, both medications make you feel fuller for longer, helping you cut down on extra calories. Both treatments are GLP-1 receptor agonists.

However, Mounjaro is also GIP mimetic, offering dual action. It mimics two hormones at the same time, helping in weight loss and supporting blood glucose levels.
