What is the dosage of Wegovy?

Wegovy is available in 5 different doses. The starting dose of the Wegovy injection is 0.25 mg, taken once a week. This dose should be taken for 4 weeks, allowing your body to get used to it and build up a tolerance to the Wegovy injection.

Starting from week 5, the dosage is increased to 0.5 mg once a week for 4 weeks. After this, the dose will increase to 1.0 mg until you have reached the maximum dose of 2.4 mg. You will continue for the rest of your treatment at this dose (or the maximum tolerated dose).

The dosing schedule will, therefore, be as follows:

  • Weeks 1-4: 0.25 mg once a week
  • Weeks 5-8: 0.5 mg once a week
  • Weeks 9-12: 1 mg once a week
  • Weeks 13-16 (or later): 1.7 mg once a week
  • Weeks 17 onwards (or later): 2.4 mg once a week

As a prescription-only medicine, it must be prescribed by a doctor and is not available over the counter.

Wegovy is a prescription-only weight-management medication that can be accessed with a valid prescription following a medical assessment by a qualified clinician in the UK. You cannot buy Wegovy over the counter, but it may be prescribed by a UK-licensed clinician through regulated online doctor services where eligibility is confirmed.

At Mayfair Weight Loss clinic, patients can buy Wegovy online only after completing a clinician-reviewed medical consultation. All prescribing decisions are made independently based on clinical suitability.

Wegovy Prescription & Eligibility in the UK

In the UK, Wegovy is commonly prescribed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition, subject to clinical assessment. Eligibility is determined by a clinician based on overall health, medical history, and risk factors — not BMI alone.

If Wegovy is not suitable, other clinically appropriate weight-management approaches may be recommended.

Who can use Wegovy?

Wegovy can be prescribed for those with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or over. It can also be taken with a BMI of 27 if you also have any weight-related comorbidities (i.e. any obesity-related issues such as high cholesterol, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes).

Once you have completed the free consultation form, our UK-registered healthcare professional will review it and may contact you if they need clarification, ask additional questions or provide any advice. Once it is approved, a prescription will be issued and sent to our pharmacy for dispensing.

Wegovy will not be suitable and will not be prescribed to you if you belong to one of the categories below:

  • Under 18 or above 75 years of age
  • You are pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant
  • You are actively breastfeeding.
  • You have liver or kidney problems
  • You have cardiac problems or pancreatitis.
  • You are a Type 1 diabetic or taking diabetic medication that causes hypoglycemia, such as insulin or sulphonylureas.
  • Have or ever had eating disorders
  • You are currently taking weight loss drugs or medication for diabetes that work in the same way as Wegovy injection, e.g., GLP-1’s such as Victoza, Ozempic, Saxenda, and Trulicity.

Where should I inject Wegovy?

Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection (injected into the skin). Subcutaneous injections can be injected into various parts of your body.

You can choose any area on your thighs, abdomen, or upper arms. You can choose a site that you are comfortable with. Change the injection site if you notice any injection marks.

Changing the injection site does not mean you have to select a totally different area; you can just move 1 cm away from your last injection site. If you are injecting into the abdomen, keep a safe distance of at least 5 cm away from the naval point.

Side effects of Wegovy

Just like any medication, you may experience some side effects, and your body will also need some time to adjust to Wegovy. You may experience the following side effects, which have been commonly reported in clinical trials:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhoea
  • Tummy ache or constipation
  • Vomiting

However, these side effects tend to fade over time once your body adjusts to Wegovy.

Wegovy VS other Weight Loss Injections

Wegovy vs Ozempic

Ozempic and Wegovy contain exactly the same active ingredient (Semaglutide). Ozempic is licensed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, whereas Wegovy is specifically licensed for weight management in the UK.

Both are once-weekly injections. Ozempic is available in 3 doses (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1.0 mg), whereas Wegovy is available in 5 doses (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1.0 mg, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg).

The active ingredient of Saxenda is Liraglutide (also a GLP-1 - a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1), and the active ingredient of Wegovy is Semaglutide.

Wegovy FAQs

Whereas the trials have shown this to be very effective in the majority of patients taking it, like any medication, it is not guaranteed to work for you. You may either not tolerate it (have severe side effects) or not respond to it and find that it does not work for you. The clinical trial by the manufacturers (STEP 1) showed that patients using Wegovy achieved an average weight loss of 14.9%. Of those:
  • Almost 84% achieved a weight loss of less or equal to or greater than 5%
  • Over 66% achieved weight loss equal to or greater than 10%
  • Almost 50% achieved weight loss of over 15%
  • Over 30% of patients lost more than 20% of their starting body weight.
Alongside taking wegovy, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and increase in physical activity.
The weight loss injection Wegovy is a long-term medication. Proper lifestyle changes and switching to a healthy diet would result in the best results. If taken properly, you could start noticing changes in as early as 4 weeks. However, you must follow the diet and continue medication for consistent results. Results may vary according to the person, as everyone has different health conditions. It is best to consider your weight loss journey as a marathon, not a sprint.
No, Wegovy does not help you burn fat. Rather, it mimics a natural hormone responsible for appetite, keeping you fuller for longer. It also reduces cravings and makes sure that you are not overeating. You can burn fat by incorporating physical activities into your routine and consistently following a healthy diet to restrict calorie intake.
Wegovy is a prescription-only weight-loss medication and is not available without a prescription. If there are any providers selling Wegovy without a medical consultation or against a prescription, then this is not legal, and they should be avoided for safety reasons. Hence, you can not buy it without a prescription. At Mayfair Weight Loss Clinic, you can order Wegovy online, and our in-house UK-based prescribers will issue a prescription after the consultation is completed. We offer tracked courier delivery service, usually next-day doorstep delivery to your nominated address within the UK mainland with discreet packaging. You can, therefore, get the Wegovy prescription online without a physical appointment.
There are no over-the-counter versions of Wegovy available in the UK. There are some medications claiming weight loss, and some do result in weight loss, but none of those medications offer the same level of effectiveness.
There are no generic alternatives for Wegovy. There are, however, similar medications available that contain the same class of the wegovy active ingredient (GLP-1), but these can significantly differ in terms of results. Ozempic is a semaglutide drug that has shown the effects of weight loss. However, it is licensed for type 2 diabetes and not weight loss. Saxenda is another drug used for weight loss. It has the active ingredient liraglutide. Although it is licensed for weight loss, it's not a day injection and is not as effective as Wegovy.
It is not recommended to take other weight loss medication with Wegovy as the side effects of taking these together have not been studied. It is especially important not to take other medication containing GLP-1’s when taking Wegovy, even if they are prescribed for the treatment of diabetes.
Wegovy injection should be stored in the fridge when not in use (between 2°C to 8°C). This will ensure that it can be used until its expiry date. Ensure that it is not stored below the temperature range or in the freezer, as it can lead to freezing. The Wegovy injection will remain in usable condition outside the fridge for 6 weeks as long as the temperature remains below 30°C. Therefore, once it is in use and you use it as per the manufacturer's guidelines, it does not need to be refrigerated.

Important points to note:

  • Do not use the Wegovy pen past the expiry date.
  • Avoid it from freezing, and do not use it if it has been frozen.
  • Do not use it if you notice that the solution is not clear and colourless.
  • Always keep the pen cap on in order to protect it from direct sunlight.
If you are currently taking Saxenda (or previously have taken Saxenda), then follow the below-mentioned guidance:
  • If you take 3.0mg Saxenda once daily, you can switch to Wegovy 0.5mg.
Wegovy and Saxenda are from the same class of medicines (GLP-1). However, they are different molecules and have different active ingredients. Starting from 0.5 mg will reduce the chances of side effects, making it a safer option. After 4 weeks on 0.5 mg, you can increase this to 1.0 mg and then to the higher doses accordingly, as per the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • If you are taking a lower dose than 3.0mg Saxenda: You can start on 0.25mg Wegovy.
  • If you have been on Saxenda previously but had a long gap in treatment: You can start on 0.25mg Wegovy.
If you need further advice, clarification or guidance on this, email us at contact@mayfairweightlossclinic.co.uk, and we will be happy to help.
If you are currently taking Ozempic or have previously taken Ozempic for weight loss, then follow the below guidance:
  • If you are currently taking Ozempic, you can switch to the same strength of Wegovy or the next higher dose. For example, if you are currently on 1.0mg Ozempic, you can go up to 1.7mg Wegovy.
  • If you have been taking Ozempic previously and have had a short treatment gap of a couple of weeks: You can continue on Wegovy from where you left off.
  • If you have been taking Ozempic 1.0mg previously and have had a longer treatment gap: You should start on 0.5 mg. Re-starting from 0.5mg will reduce the chances of side effects such as nausea, so it is the safer and appropriate option.
If you have been taking Ozempic for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, then you should continue on Ozempic and not take Wegovy. Wegovy is not licensed for type-2 diabetes. If you need any further advice, clarification or guidance on this, then email us at contact@mayfairweightlossclinic.co.uk, and we will respond as soon as possible.
It is important to try to take your dose on the same day each week. However if you forget or miss it then follow the following guidance: If your dose is:
  • Delayed for 4 days or less, you should take the dose immediately as soon as you remember. You can inject your next dose as usual on your scheduled day.
  • Delayed for more than 4 days, then you should skip the missed dose. You should inject your next dose as usual on your next scheduled day.
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose if it has been delayed for more than 4 days.

For example, if you take your dose on Sunday and you missed it and then remember to take it on Wednesday, then take it as soon as possible and continue as normal the following Sunday. If your scheduled day is Sunday and you forgot to take it till Thursday, skip that week and take it the following Sunday.

Our recommendation is that you add a reminder for your Wegovy dose. It will help you inject it on the same day of the week and at the same time. Make the habit of writing that you have taken your dose; it's an easy way to remember when you took your last Wegovy dose.
Semaglutide is the chemical name and active ingredient which is contained in Wegovy. Wegovy is therefore one of the brand names of Semaglutide which is licensed for licensed for weight management. Ozempic and Rybelsus (medicines licensed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes) also contain Semaglutide.
If you If you are currently taking Ozempic or have previously taken Ozempic for weight loss then follow the following guidance:
  • If you are currently taking Ozempic:You can switch to the same strength of Wegovy or the next higher dose. For example, if you are currently on 1.0mg Ozempic then you can go up to 1.7mg Wegovy.
  • If you have been taking Ozempic previously and have had a short treatment gap of a couple of weeks: You can continue on Wegovy from you left off at.
  • If you have been taking Ozempic 1.0mg previously and have had a longer treatment gap: You should start on the 0.5mg. Re-starting from 0.5mg will reduce the chances of side effects such as nausea so it is the safer and appropriate option

If you need any further advice, clarification or guidance on this then email us on contact@mayfairweightlossclinic.co.uk and we will respond as soon as possible.
If you are currently taking Saxenda (or previously have taken Saxenda) then follow the following guidance:

  • If you are taking 3.0mg Saxenda once-daily:

You can switch to 0.5mg Wegovy. Wegovy and Saxenda are from the same class of medicines (GLP-1) however they are different molecules.
