What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a prescription weight loss treatment containing semaglutide, approved by the MHRA and NICE for weight management. Wegovy injection is prescribed for individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with weight-related health conditions like prediabetes or high blood pressure.

Wegovy works by replicating GLP-1, a hormone that helps control appetite, regulate blood sugar, and make you feel fuller for longer. Weight loss injection Wegovy is taken once a week, with a maximum dose of 2.4mg.

Wegovy weight loss treatment helps by:

  • Reducing excessive appetite signals
  • Slowing the movement of food through the stomach
  • Supporting earlier feelings of fullness
  • Encouraging more consistent eating patterns

Clincal team recommend using Wegovy alongside healthy eating and exercise for optimal results. It supports weight loss but should not replace lifestyle changes.

Who is eligible for Wegovy UK?

The clinical team may consider Wegovy injection following a structured medical assessment completed through an online consultation. It is generally appropriate for adults who meet one of the following criteria:

A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above

A BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related health condition, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Prediabetes
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea

A UK-licensed prescriber confirms final suitability after reviewing your medical information. Always read the patient information leaflet before starting treatment.

How does Wegovy work for weight loss?

Wegovy for weight loss contains semaglutide, a man made version which mirrors the effects of GLP-1 released naturally after eating. This hormone communicates with the brain to signal fullness and helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Through this mechanism, Wegovy:

  • Encourages fullness sooner during meals
  • Reduces persistent hunger between meals
  • Slows digestion to extend satiety

For optimal results, clinical team recommend using Wegovy alongside a calorie-controlled diet and regular physical activity. Clinical evidence shows that many individuals achieved meaningful weight reduction of around 5% when following this combined approach.

How effective is Wegovy for weight loss?
Effective Wegovy

How effective is Wegovy for weight loss?

Clinical studies show that consistent use of the Wegovy weight loss pen can support significant weight reduction when taken as prescribed. In long-term 68-week trials, participants using the 2.4mg maintenance dose achieved notably greater weight loss than those receiving placebo.

Clinical trial results showed:

  • 86% of participants lost at least 5% of body weight
  • 69% achieved a 10% reduction
  • 50% lost 15% or more

Researchers also observed reductions in waist measurement and improvements in blood pressure. Individual results vary.

Disclaimer: These outcomes reflect clinical trial data and do not guarantee the same results for every individual.

Expected weight changes across Wegovy dose levels

Weight loss outcomes depend on dose progression, consistency, and lifestyle habits. Higher doses typically provide stronger appetite regulation, although individual responses differ and require clinical review.

Available Wegovy Dosages and Wegovy Prices UK

Wegovy weight loss injections follows a step-by-step dosing schedule designed to help the body adjust comfortably. How to use Wegovy pens?

Wegovy is administered once a week as an injection beneath the skin and does not depend on meal timing. Selecting a fixed day each week helps build consistency and supports regular use. Each weight loss pen is designed to provide four weekly doses, covering a full month of treatment. After the final dose is used, a new pen is required for the next treatment period.

Before giving your injection, take a few moments to prepare properly to ensure safe and accurate use.

  • Verify your medication: Check the pen label carefully to confirm it matches your prescribed Wegovy strength and dosage.
  • Inspect the solution: Remove the pen cap and view the liquid inside the pen window. The solution should appear clear and colourless. Do not use the pen if you notice cloudiness or visible particles.
  • Attach a new needle: Use a new needle for every injection. Twist it securely onto the pen to ensure correct delivery.
  • Perform a flow check (first use only): When using a new pen for the first time, remove both needle caps and complete the flow check as instructed in the patient information leaflet to confirm the pen is working correctly.
  • Set your dose: Turn the dose selector until your prescribed dose is clearly shown in the display window.
  • Select an injection site: Inject into the abdomen (avoiding the area within 5cm of the belly button), thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites each week to help reduce skin irritation and support consistent absorption.
  • Give the injection: Insert the needle straight into the skin and keep the dose window visible while the medication is delivered.
  • Dispose of used items safely: After the injection, place the outer needle cap back on, remove the needle carefully, and dispose of the needle and cap in a sharps container.

Where should Wegovy be injected?

Wegovy for weight loss is injected just under the skin into areas with adequate fatty tissue. Suitable sites include the abdomen, thighs, or upper arms. Rotating injection areas each week helps protect the skin and improves comfort.

Using different sites regularly also supports consistent absorption. Avoid injecting into the same exact spot repeatedly, even within the same area.

When injecting into the abdomen ensure a 5 cm distance from the navel

When injecting into the abdomen ensure a 5 cm distance from the navel.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Wegovy?

If you miss a dose, timing determines the next step. When fewer than five days have passed since your scheduled injection, take the missed dose as soon as possible and continue on your usual day. If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and wait for your next scheduled injection.

Do not take double doses, as this increases side-effect risk without improving results. If you miss two or more doses, speak with our clinical team. They may advise restarting the weight loss shot Wegovy at a lower dose, particularly if digestive side effects occurred previously.

Wegovy Interactions with other medication

Before starting Wegovy injection, share a complete list of all medicines you use, including supplements and over-the-counter products. This allows clinical team to identify interactions and plan treatment safely.

Extra monitoring is required for people using insulin or sulfonylureas, as combining these with Wegovy for weight loss can increase the risk of low blood sugar. The weight loss medication should not be used alongside other GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Mounjaro or liraglutide, due to increased side-effect risk.

Who should not take Wegovy?

Do not start Wegovy weight loss injections if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Current evidence does not confirm its safety during pregnancy or while nursing, so healthcare professionals advise against use during these periods. The weight loss pen is also not usually prescribed for people with a BMI below 27 unless a clinically recognised weight-related condition is present.

Avoid weight loss injection if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to semaglutide or any ingredient used in the injection. Certain medical conditions also require careful assessment before treatment. These include diabetic eye disease, a previous episode of pancreatitis, or advanced heart failure, where closer monitoring or alternative options may be more appropriate.

The clinical team must review your medical history before treatment if you have:

  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • A history of pancreatitis
  • Previous episodes of low blood sugar
  • Diabetic retinopathy

Some medicines can interfere with how Wegovy works or increase the chance of side effects. This includes other GLP-1–based treatments such as Saxenda or Mounjaro, as well as diabetes medicines like insulin or sulfonylureas. In these cases, the clinical team may adjust doses, monitoring, or treatment plans to maintain safety.

Always provide a full list of medicines and supplements you use, including non-prescription and herbal products. The healthcare professionals use this information to confirm whether Wegovy is appropriate for you. Treatment only begins after a full medical consultation confirms it is appropriate.

Side effects of Wegovy

Not everyone experiences side effects while using Wegovy for weight loss. When symptoms occur, they often appear during treatment initiation or dose increases and usually improve as the body adjusts.

Very common side effects of Wegovy

These effects are reported most frequently, especially during the early stages of treatment:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Tiredness or general weakness

Common side effects of Wegovy

Some individuals may also notice:

    Indigestion or bloating
  • Gas or reflux
  • Hair thinning
  • Injection site reactions
  • Gallstones
  • Gastritis
  • Low blood sugar in people using diabetes medicines
  • Changes in taste

Uncommon side effects of Wegovy

Less frequently reported effects include:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Raised pancreatic enzymes
  • Slowed stomach emptying
  • Low blood sugar without diabetes
  • Raised bilirubin levels

Rare side effects

Although uncommon, some side effects require urgent medical attention. These include:

  • Worsening of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy)
  • Severe or persistent pain in the abdomen or back, which may indicate pancreatitis
  • Kidney or bladder stones, sometimes causing sharp pain, urinary changes, or difficulty passing urine
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face or throat, breathing difficulties, dizziness, or hives
  • Increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in people with reduced bone strength
  • Bowel obstruction, which may present as severe constipation, bloating, and vomiting
  • Always read the patient information leaflet and seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

How to reduce and manage Wegovy side effects?

Most people experience mild side effects when starting Wegovy, and these often improve as the body adjusts. You can reduce discomfort by staying well hydrated, choosing easily digested foods, and spreading meals into smaller portions throughout the day. These adjustments help ease nausea and digestive symptoms during treatment.

If side effects continue, become more noticeable, or begin to interfere with daily life, you should contact a healthcare professional for guidance. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe abdominal pain, breathing problems, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat, as these may signal a serious reaction.

Many people tolerate Wegovy without difficulty and continue treatment comfortably. The weight loss injection supports weight management over time, and side effects usually remain manageable with the right support.

Wegovy warnings

Do not use Wegovy if you have a known allergy to semaglutide or any ingredient in the injection. Before starting treatment, speak with a healthcare professional if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or a previous episode of pancreatitis.

You should also seek medical advice if you have diabetic retinopathy or expect to undergo surgery requiring anaesthesia. Always inform our clinical team if you take other medicines, particularly insulin, sulfonylureas, or other weight-loss injections such as Saxenda or Mounjaro.

Wegovy and pregnancy

Do not use Wegovy during pregnancy or when planning to become pregnant. Stop treatment at least two months before trying to conceive. If you suspect pregnancy at any point, discontinue Wegovy and seek medical advice promptly.

Wegovy and breastfeeding

Do not use Wegovy while breastfeeding. Current evidence does not confirm whether semaglutide passes into breast milk or how it may affect a nursing infant.

Contraception

Use reliable contraception while taking Wegovy. Although the medication does not directly affect oral contraceptives, vomiting or diarrhoea may reduce absorption. In these cases, a clinician may recommend additional or alternative contraception methods.

Does Wegovy have heart health benefits?

Wegovy is approved by the MHRA in the UK for obesity management and has additional relevance for cardiovascular health. Clinical evidence suggests that weight loss achieved with Wegovy may lower the risk of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, in people with obesity and related risk factors.

What to expect after stopping Wegovy?

Wegovy does not cause dependence, and treatment can stop once a healthy weight or BMI is achieved. After discontinuation, appetite regulation gradually decreases, and hunger levels may rise. Clinical research shows that weight regain commonly occurs without ongoing lifestyle support, with some individuals regaining a significant portion of lost weight within a year.

Maintaining results after stopping Wegovy requires continued attention to diet and physical activity. While stopping treatment does not cause withdrawal symptoms, stepping away from healthy routines increases the risk of weight regain. Consistent habits remain essential for long-term weight management.

The most common side effects include:

  • Mild nausea
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue (especially in the early weeks of treatment)

These effects often improve as treatment continues. Support is available for managing symptoms.

Other prescription options include Mounjaro, Saxenda, and Nevolat. These treatments work similarly and may be considered if Wegovy is not suitable.  Our clinicians may also discuss Non-prescription strategies.
No. Wegovy is only available with a prescription in the UK following assessment by a licensed clinician.
Achieving a healthier weight can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Clinical studies also show improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation markers.
No. Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is licensed for weight loss, while Rybelsus is prescribed for type 2 diabetes. They differ in purpose, dosing, and formulation.
Do not use Wegovy while breastfeeding. It is unclear whether the medication passes into breast milk, so treatment should be avoided during this period. For a complete description of any Wegovy side effects and restrictions, please make sure to read the Patient Information Leaflet.
The Wegovy injection cost on the prescribed dose. Full Wegovy price information is provided during consultation so you can make an informed decision.
Yes. Mental health support is available for those who need help managing emotional or behavioural challenges related to weight loss.
Plateaus can occur as the body adapts to changes. Adjustments to treatment, diet, or activity levels may help restart progress.
Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, but they are prescribed for different purposes. It is approved for weight loss, while Ozempic is used to manage type 2 diabetes. Although they share the same active ingredient, their dosing differs to suit these distinct uses. Wegovy medication primarily supports appetite control, whereas Ozempic focuses on blood sugar regulation in people with diabetes. The maximum Ozempic dose is 2mg, used only when lower doses do not adequately control blood glucose.
There are no over-the-counter versions of Wegovy available in the UK. While some non-prescription products claim to support weight loss, none offer the same mechanism of action or clinical evidence as Wegovy. Prescription assessment is required to ensure suitability and safety.
Using other weight loss medications alongside Wegovy is not recommended. The safety of combining these treatments has not been established, and doing so may increase the risk of side effects. In particular, you should not take any other medicines containing GLP-1 receptor agonists while using Wegovy, even if they are prescribed for diabetes.

If you are currently using Saxenda or have used it previously, the following guidance applies:

  • If you are taking Saxenda 3.0mg once daily: You may switch to Wegovy 0.5mg once weekly. Although both medicines belong to the GLP-1 class, they contain different active ingredients. Starting at 0.5mg helps reduce the risk of side effects. After four weeks, the dose may be increased gradually in line with prescribing guidance.
  • If you are taking a lower dose than 3.0mg of Saxenda: You should start Wegovy at 0.25mg.
  • If you previously used Saxenda but had a long break in treatment: Restarting at 0.25mg Wegovy is advised to improve tolerability.

Fatigue (especially in the early weeks of treatment) These effects often improve as treatment continues. Support is available for managing symptoms.

If you are currently using Ozempic or have used it previously for weight loss, the following guidance applies:

  • If you are currently taking Ozempic: You may switch to the equivalent dose of Wegovy or the next dose level. For example, if you are on 1.0mg Ozempic, you may move to 1.7mg Wegovy.
  • If you have had a short treatment gap of a few weeks: You may continue Wegovy at the dose you previously reached.
  • If you were previously taking Ozempic 1.0mg and had a longer break: Restarting Wegovy at 0.5mg is recommended to reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea.
  • If Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes: You should continue using Ozempic and not switch to Wegovy. Wegovy is not licensed for diabetes management.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient contained in Wegovy. It is a branded form of semaglutide that is specifically licensed for weight management. Other medicines, such as Ozempic and Rybelsus, also contain semaglutide but are licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss.

If you are switching from Ozempic used for weight loss, the same guidance applies:

  • If you are currently on Ozempic: You may switch to the same or next higher dose of Wegovy.
  • If you had a short break in treatment: You may continue from your previous dose level.
  • If you had a longer treatment gap: Restarting at 0.5mg Wegovy is safer and helps reduce side effects.

If Ozempic is being used for type 2 diabetes, you should not switch to Wegovy. Switching from Saxenda to Wegovy (summary guidance)

  • Saxenda 3.0mg daily → Wegovy 0.5mg weekly
  • Lower Saxenda dose → Wegovy 0.25mg
  • Long gap after Saxenda → Wegovy 0.25mg

Dose increases should follow manufacturer guidance and clinical advice.

Wegovy is exclusively offered as an injectable treatment. While oral GLP-1 medications are available, they are not currently part of our service offerings. However, a new oral GLP-1 treatment is being developed, with manufacturers aiming for approval by 2026.
