How Is Mounjaro Taken?

Mounjaro is a once-weekly weight loss injection. Each pack of Mounjaro contains 4 single-use pens. Each pen contains one dose of Mounjaro either 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, or 15 mg.

You can use your pen at any time of the day, with or without meals. You should use it on the same day each week if you can.

In order to adjust to the medication, you will start by taking the lowest dose (2.5 mg for 4 weeks then working your way up to 15 mg. Therefore, if you tolerate each dose of treatment then the dosing schedule will be as follows:

  • Weeks 1-4: 2.5 mg weekly
  • Weeks 5-8: 5.0 mg weekly
  • Weeks 9-12: 7.5 mg weekly
  • Weeks 13-16: 10.0 mg weekly
  • Weeks 17-20: 12.5 mg weekly
  • Weeks 21 onwards: 15.0 mg weekly

How to inject Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection) of your stomach area (abdomen) or upper leg (thigh). It is recommended that you use a different site of injection each week to reduce the chances of injection site infections.

What are the side effects?

Like all medications, Mounjaro/Tirzepatidecan have side effects, although you may not experience them for yourself.

The most common side effects of this medication include:

Feeling sick (nausea)

Diarrhoea

Decrease in appetite

Being sick (vomiting)

Constipation

Indigestion

Stomach (abdominal) pain

However, you will usually find that these side effects ease off as your treatment continues and your body gets used to your new medication.

Wegovy is exclusively offered as an injectable treatment. While oral GLP-1 medications are available, they are not currently part of our service offerings. However, a new oral GLP-1 treatment is being developed, with manufacturers aiming for approval by 2026.

  • If you are currently on Ozempic: You may switch to the same or next higher dose of Wegovy.
  • If you had a short break in treatment: You may continue from your previous dose level.
  • If you had a longer treatment gap: Restarting at 0.5mg Wegovy is safer and helps reduce side effects.

  • Saxenda 3.0mg daily → Wegovy 0.5mg weekly

Semaglutide is the active ingredient contained in Wegovy. It is a branded form of semaglutide that is specifically licensed for weight management. Other medicines, such as Ozempic and Rybelsus, also contain semaglutide but are licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss.
If you are currently using Ozempic or have used it previously for weight loss, the following guidance applies:
  • If you are currently taking Ozempic: You may switch to the equivalent dose of Wegovy or the next dose level. For example, if you are on 1.0mg Ozempic, you may move to 1.7mg Wegovy.
  • If you have had a short treatment gap of a few weeks: You may continue Wegovy at the dose you previously reached.
  • If you were previously taking Ozempic 1.0mg and had a longer break: Restarting Wegovy at 0.5mg is recommended to reduce the risk of side effects such as nausea.
  • If Ozempic is prescribed for type 2 diabetes: You should continue using Ozempic and not switch to Wegovy. Wegovy is not licensed for diabetes management.
If you are currently using Saxenda or have used it previously, the following guidance applies:
  • If you are taking Saxenda 3.0mg once daily: You may switch to Wegovy 0.5mg once weekly. Although both medicines belong to the GLP-1 class, they contain different active ingredients. Starting at 0.5mg helps reduce the risk of side effects. After four weeks, the dose may be increased gradually in line with prescribing guidance.
  • If you are taking a lower dose than 3.0mg of Saxenda: You should start Wegovy at 0.25mg.
  • If you previously used Saxenda but had a long break in treatment: Restarting at 0.25mg Wegovy is advised to improve tolerability.
Using other weight loss medications alongside Wegovy is not recommended. The safety of combining these treatments has not been established, and doing so may increase the risk of side effects. In particular, you should not take any other medicines containing GLP-1 receptor agonists while using Wegovy, even if they are prescribed for diabetes.
There are no over-the-counter versions of Wegovy available in the UK. While some non-prescription products claim to support weight loss, none offer the same mechanism of action or clinical evidence as Wegovy. Prescription assessment is required to ensure suitability and safety.
