What is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)?
Everything You Need to Know About the Treatment
Mounjaro is a weight loss treatment that contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide. This treatment involves injections containing doses ranging from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. A pre-filled Mounjaro injection contains 4 doses, lasting up to 4 weeks.
Mounjaro treatment has been clinically proven to treat two health conditions: Diabetes Type-2 and weight loss. Mounjaro works by performing in a similar way that the body's natural hormones GLP-1 and GIP do. Because these natural hormones regulate appetite, feeling of fullness, and blood glucose levels, Mounjaro is the first weight loss injection in its class that works similarly, controlling blood glucose levels, satiety, and hunger.
Mounjaro treatment is prescribed to individuals with a BMI of 30 and above or those with a BMI of 27-30 with at least one additional weight-related co-diagnosis, such as:
- Sleep apnoea
- Joint pain or stiffness due to osteoarthritis
- Type 2 diabetes or elevated blood sugar levels
- Raised or uncontrolled blood pressure (hypertension)
- Elevated cholesterol levels
According to clinical trials, Mounjaro has demonstrated faster and more effective results than other GLP-1 medications.

To inject Mounjaro, press down on the dose knob until the dose window shows a 0, indicating the dose has been fully administered. Slowly pull the needle out of your skin.
For those new to self-injection, Mounjaro offers a more comfortable and user-friendly experience than traditional injection pens. Many users find the process quick, discreet, and manageable at home.

How Does Mounjaro Work in the Body?
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) works by activating the body's natural hormones, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (gastric inhibitory peptide). These hormones are responsible for regulating blood sugar levels and appetite.
- Suppresses appetite, making you feel fuller for longer.
- Slow down gastric emptying, which prolongs the feeling of fullness after meals.
- Improve insulin sensitivity, aiding in better blood sugar control.
This dual action supports weight loss and improved glycemic control.
Mounjaro Side Effects

Always consult your doctor and read the Patient Information Leaflet for more information about the treatment and its side effects.
Who Should Avoid Mounjaro?
Do not use mounjaro if you are:
- Under 18
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Allergic to any ingredients
Speak to your doctor if you have kidney, pancreatitis, or digestive problems.
What Foods Should Be Avoided?
While you are on Mounjaro treatment, you should avoid the following foods:
- High-glycaemic fruits like pineapple, watermelon, and overripe bananas.
- Sugary snacks such as biscuits, fizzy drinks, and cakes.
- Fried foods like burgers and bacon may worsen nausea.
Warnings & Interactions
Mounjaro may interact with insulin or sulfonylureas, increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. Disclose all medications—prescribed, OTC, or herbal—to your provider before starting.
Refer to the patient leaflet for detailed warnings and interactions.

What Is the Difference Between Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) and Wegovy (Semaglutide)?
While both Mounjaro and Wegovy are injectable medications used for weight management, they have some key differences:
Active Ingredients
- Mounjaro contains Tirzepatide, which targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.
- Wegovy contains Semaglutide, which targets only the GLP-1 receptor.
Mechanism of Action
- Mounjaro's dual receptor activity may enhance appetite suppression and blood sugar regulation.
- Wegovy focuses solely on GLP-1 receptor activation, which aids appetite suppression and glycemic control.
Efficacy
- Clinical studies suggest that Mounjaro may lead to greater weight loss than Wegovy, though Novo Nordisk manufactures Wegovy.
- Mounjaro is manufactured by Eli Lilly.
- Wegovy is manufactured by Novo Nordisk.
Both medications are administered once weekly and are available through prescription. It's important to consult a healthcare professional to determine which treatment suits your health needs.
Choosing the Right Weight Loss Option
While Mounjaro is a good option for many, medications like Wegovy or Saxenda may suit others better. Talk to a healthcare provider to make the right choice based on your weight loss goals and medical history.

- If you are currently taking a higher than 1mg dose of Wegovy then egovy (more than 1mg) you must stop treatment for 4 weeks before commencing treatment of Mounjaro
You should not take both medications at the same time as they work in very similar ways and could produce dangerous side effects if taken together.
